FINANCE MONTHLY M&A AWARDS 2020 23 Remote DP trials were born from client’s requests to have trials performed in remote locations, but remaining within the guidance provided by industry bodies. This was achieved following a 12 month pilot scheme on 3 vessels in remote locations, following which the system was refined, and rolled to the market in 2015. The unique DP Marine vessel database was introduced in 2016, and which remains an iindispensible vessel management tool for both the vessels and for shore management. This service is provided free of charge to company clients and is where the remote DP trials scheme is now administered extremely efficiently. Some clients use the database as their primary tool with regards to planning vessel inspections, DP trials and overview of DP critical equipment on each vessel. Vessel charterers can be given access to vessels enrolled on remote DP trials with a view to maintaining standards, full transparency and building trust in the system. DP Marine are the longest established and only experienced provider of industry compliant remote DP trials. In 2018 in partnership with Vessel Technolgy Ltd, DP Marinemade independent network storm testing available to the industry. Previously network storm testing was confined to tests provided by the OEM’s who had to attend the vessel in person and who could only test their own systems. Costly for the ship owners and no demonstration of independence. The DP Marine system can be rented, leased or purchased, and shipped to the vessel for use during remote trials or as a regular testing system under PMS routines, or for one-off use during trials. In sole partnership with Human Recognition Systems Ltd, Biometric access & people tracking systems for the marine industry were introduced to the DP Marine portfolio in 2019. Card systems only read the person carrying the card, not the person the card actually belongs to. Only biometric systems can do that. Positive ID of the person combined with unique software developed in-house means that for the first time ever, biometric access control and real-time people tracking systems are available for the Offshore industry through DP Marine. Other outside-the-box thinking has resulted in another unique product due to be rolled out in 2020. Details will be revealed later in the year but this innovative product is set to revolutionise the planning and execution of DP trials, both attended and remote. ABOUT PETER SOLVANG Peter was a Deck Cadet with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, first going to sea in 1974. He entered the Offshore industry in 1979 as second officer on an air dive vessel in the North Sea, and was promoted to Master in 1985. He remained as C/O or Master until coming ashore in 2007. His sea-going career as Master spanned all areas of the world on nearly all types of DP 2 & DP 3 vessels, accumulating over 14,000 hours on the DP desk. On coming ashore, he joined a Bergen based company as vessel inspections manager where he gained invaluable experience in performing DP trials, vessel inspections such as OVID and CMID and as Offshore project manager in wind farm installations and subsea completion projects. In 2011 he was recruited by GL Noble Denton to be the DP country Manager for the Nordic regions, quickly building the company’s profile & client base with a year-on-year doubling of turnover until he left following the GL ND merger with DNV. He formed his own DP centre of Excellence late in 2014, calling the new company DP & Marine Assurance Norway. Based in Bergen Norway, demand was quickly established in other global locations, and as of today DP Marine has branch offices in Stavanger, Denmark, UK & Singapore. The company has a number of long term frame and sole supplier agreements with ship owners and managers around the world.
